#6 Poetic Devices In Narration

Imagery

Sensory details in a literary work (Ex. sight, sound, taste, touch, or smell)

"The makeshift runway stretched out in both directions, bordered closely on either side by high dunes.
They were so high that I couldn't see over them. I scrambled up the side of the dune, and sand avalanched down. It seemed like half of it was going into my leather loafers." (Walters, Just Deserts 42)

"The path leading away was much softer underfoot than the runway, and I was leaving tracks behind me in the sand. That had a calming effect." (Walters, Just Deserts 54)

The purpose of this device is to explain what it was like for Ethan (the main character) when he was dropped off in the desert after being expelled from his private boarding school in the UK. His father sent him to the desert to find his own way home as a punishment for being expelled (again) from school. He is left with a backpack of supplies and a letter telling him where to go. He is left to fend for himself in the desert and find his own way back in this hot desolate place. It describes how he felt with nothing but sand surrounding him when he expected to be in New York back home with his father. This is how Ethan starts his journey in the deserts of North Africa.

#5 Significance Of?

Night - Elie Wiesel

Significant Elements
1. The War
2. Perserverence

The war plays a very significant role in the novel "Night". The war is the cause of every event in the story. It creates a very sad and depressing atmosphere for everyone in the story. It makes it that much tougher for the characters in the story to survive and intensifies the situation that is already a matter of life and death. The war is the main cause of events for this book and the reason that everything happens the way it does. Without the war there would be no story.

Perseverance is very important to the characters in this story. The characters have no choice but to persevere in order to stay alive. They are already living under terrible conditions. They get very very little food, have no shoes, they have very tiny beds, and their room has no floor. It was very very tough to live under these conditions and the characters would very easily die if they made one little mistake. Perserverance is very very important in this story. If  the characters hadn't perservered the story would be even more depressing and saddening then it already is.

#4 Character Attributes

Courage

"Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; it is also what it takes to sit down and listen"
-Winston Churchill
Churchill, Winston. "Courage Quotes - BrainyQuote." Famous Quotes at BrainyQuote. N.p., n.d. Web. 4 Mar. 2013. <http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/topic

Courage means to be brave and willing. You have to be willing to take on a task that may be very dangerous or

In the book Acceleration, courage is demonstrated mainly by the main character. He finds a journal created by a stalker who is experimenting ways to kill people on mice and cats. He is trying to find the person who wrote the journal. He is stalking people who use the TTC Subway in Toronto. He is using this journal to try and find and catch the stalker. He is being very courageous by doing so. He has no idea who this guy is or what he might do to him if he gets caught. He could end up dead.

#3 Define And Describe

The Main Elements Of Night

The five main elements used in Night novel are:

  1. Conflict
  2. Characters
  3. Setting
  4. Mood
  5. Plot

1.) Conflict - The book takes place in Germany during WWII so conflict plays a huge role in the book. The main character and his father are in conflict with each other alot because they want whats best for each other they both want to survive and the decisions they make could mean the difference between life and death.

2.) Characters - The characters in the book are the basis for the story. This story is the real life account of a holocaust survivor. This young boy who was in the concentration camp lost his mother, sisters, and his father he had to make friends and find people who he could trust and those people play a very important role in this book.

3.) Setting - The setting for this book is in Germany in the concentration camps. The climate plays a big role in the book because Germany in the winter can get very cold and these people who all they had was a t-shirt and light pants had to endure the cold temperatures in the winter and many of them died from it.

4.) Mood - The mood in this book is very important. The author has made the mood in the book a very sad/depressing mood and it is very well written because the reader is is really drawn into the book and can better understand what it was like to be in the concentration camps in Germany.

5.) Plot - This book is a historical fiction and the plot is all based on real life events. The plot just helps to tell the reader what they had to endure and how certain events that happened effected the people in the camps and how they were dealt with.

3. Define and Describe
  1. COURAGECourage is to be brave and to take on a challenge. It is to not give up on a task no matter what might happen in the end. It's to help other people and possibly make sacrifices to do so. Courage is to be brave, responsible, heroic, and respectful. It is usually very difficult and is not accomplished easily but will pay off in the end.
  2. COURAGE IN "NIGHT" -  Courage in the book "night"  is demonstrated in many ways. The main character Elie is sent to a concentration camp in Germany with his family his mother and sisters are separated from him, but Elie and his dad stick together. They are forced to work and are given very little to eat. When Elie's father starts to get very very weak he gives up his ration of soup and bread for his dad. He gives everything he has to his dad. They have to protect each other and support each other. Elie is very courageous in defending his father and his newly found friends within the camp. He gives it everything he has and is determined to protect his father and himself.
  3. THE PLOT - The plot in the book "Night" has taught me that if you wanted to survive in the Nazi concentration camps you had to be very brave and courageous. You had to be willing to fight for everything you had, including your life. If you wanted to survive you had to be willing to fight for everything you've got. The main character (Elie) has told me that these death camps were hell and if you wanted any chance at survival you had to be extremely brave and prepared to fight for everything and anything you have.

#1 Qualities Of A Good Book

Some of the qualities that I expect from a good book are that it is interesting. I like a book that is interesting and that keep you interested and excited to read the book. If you are reading a book and you are not interested in anything in the book then chances are you are going to abandon it. Another thing I like in a good book is the type of genre. My favourite genre is either adventure, mystery, or historical fiction. My favourite genre to read out of those three would be adventure. I like reading books about adventure because they are usually more exciting than the others and they keep me motivated to read more. One quality that is not necessary but it is something that I like to watch out for is the size. I dont like reading books that have hundreds and thousands of pages. I find that after a while of reading a book that is of that length gets very boring and I usually end up abandoning the book.

Some books that I have read and enjoyed are:

- Au Revoir Les Enfants
- Acceleration
- Secrets of the FBI
- Camp X
- Night
